Butternut Box vs dry dog food

Did you know for dog food to be labelled as chicken flavour its recipe can contain as little as 4% chicken? That can be any part of the carcass too. At Butternut Box, we are different. We make fresh, home-cooked meals. We publish our recipes (we'd encourage you to read the labels on your existing food) and we use fresh, natural ingredients.

Home-cooked vs dry. What’s the difference?

Well, ingredients for start. We challenge anyone to read the label on your dog's food and try to understand what goes in there. Our food is 60% meat and the rest is a healthy mix of vegetables and carbs. We also have a different cooking process - we gently-cook our food at lower temperatures than traditional dog food to retain nutrients.

Butternut Box

Dry food

We use ingredients that are fit for humans and taste-tested by the team here first.

Can contain meat meal, preservatives and other cheap fillers.

All of our meals are cooked to order in small batches every week.

Produced on an industrial scale and can often sit on the shelves for months.

We cook at low temperatures to increase palatability, digestibility and retain nutrient content.

Cooked through a process called extrusion which involves cooking up to 150 degrees Celsius.

We have four recipes that arrive pre-portioned based on the age, weight and breed of your dog.

Usually one flavour until the bag runs out.

How Butternut Box can help

Butternutters tell us that their pups have healthier skin, higher energy levels and their stools improve on our food. The quality of our ingredients may have something to do with that. Dogs themselves? Well, they love the taste. Meal time leads to a phenomenon called the Butternut Happy Dance.

What folks have been saying

We’re not ones to blow our own trumpets (we’re oboe players anyway), but here’s some nice words about us from people who may or may not play trumpets…

"Like two angels coming from nowhere, they came and said ‘we can do the cooking for you’. I would be lost without having that delivery every week because it just makes my life so much easier.”
